When I first started playing WoW some 17 months or so ago, I found out pretty quickly who Onyxia was. I’m a dragon lover at heart, after all. She became my first personal quest. Forget all the in-game stuff I had to do. All that mattered was getting Siori to that point to take on Onyxia herself.
When I started out, you actually still needed to be attuned to go into her Lair. Let me tell you, if not for some awesome friends who all became guildmates…I don’t think I ever would have finished escorting the Marshal in Blackrock Depths. But, I did. Things being what they were, though, hardly anyone ever did Onyxia pre-Lich King. It was old content and I guess it didn’t have the appeal to others that it did for me. So, as luck would have it, the day I hit 70 I also went into her Lair. A bit late, I know. Still, it was everything I hoped it would be, even in a mildly watered down state.
Somewhere along the way, I remember reading that she was being taken down solo. I know I wasn’t the only one thinking that was just plain wrong, but the “veterans” always argued that she was part of the old story and didn’t need to be updated. I argue she’s a damn dragon. I don’t care how you want to explain that. Look at the dragons in Wrath. How many named dragons can you solo there? Or even one of the World Drakes? Exactly.
Well, players like me are getting their wish. As of the next minor patch (3.2.2) Onyxia is getting a facelift. Blizzard says it’s part of their 5th anniversary, but I’m looking forward to seeing how it fits into the story. She’s going to be 10 and 25 man raids with new loot tables. Apparently there’s even a mount that looks quite similar to her. That part disappoints me a bit as a lore fan, since you defeat her…you don’t put a saddle on her.
At least she won’t be solo’d anymore.
