Blizzard took some big steps with 4.0 in having less “useless” gear. Granted, every piece of gear had some purpose to it, the old Strength/Agility combo on cloth was not exactly needed in abundance. The developers already said most of that gear is gone in Cataclysm, which is great news (though Enchanters might miss some of it). For the higher level gear that remains (ilevel 200 or higher), we can improve on stats via Reforging.
First off, to have reforging done you need to simply head to a city and find the Enchanting trainer. The Reforger is near them. Once you’ve found them, it’s time to tweak your gear. You can change out any secondary stat (such as hit or crit) or Spirit, for another secondary stat or Spirit. So, you could drop your Crit rating if it was incredibly high for some Dodge if you’re a Death Knight and need a boost there. By Runeforging, you move 40 percent of one stat for another. You can do this once per piece of gear.
End game, this is a great idea. It will allow players to reach their cap(s) more efficiently and give some leeway in how they gem and enchant. My only disappointment is that it’s limited to Spirit in core abilities. I would like to have been able to move Stamina, or Intellect as a Priest, or Strength as a Warrior, if I felt I had enough on my character. Since we’re in baseball playoffs I’d sum this up as Blizzard tried for the home run, but only got a double -great opportunity, but is just a hair off from becoming something more.
