Do Unto Others

Among the messages on the load screen that states something to the effect of “be nice to others in your party and you might get invited back.”  Let’s be honest, most of the time we’re in pretty decent groups.  There are occasions where you get one person (or more) who just sets off that vein in your head, but by and large it’s all good.  Trade, on the other hand, is a different story.

A wise person on the internet stated once that you can take the nicest person in the world, but give them a computer screen to hide behind and an audience and they become scum of the earth (I’m paraphrasing).  The funny thing is, I know this to be true.  I have one of these people as a friend and I just don’t get it.  What’s harder than figuring him out, is trying to not become like him and the others.

Sure, the easiest thing to do is leave /2. completely.  Sometimes though, I like seeing what groups are forming or what someone is selling (or this week, who needs wands and what they’re paying for them).  What I find happens, is one clown sucks down half the rest.  Yes, we call `em trolls.  They come off so absurd you can’t help but address them and then you get pulled into a snowball of ignorance and annoyance.  I actually caught myself becoming rather snide on Trade recently and stopped and asked, “Self, when did you become such an asshole?”

From that precise moment, I’ve made a point of being nice again.  Never mind the “noobs” and that.  I help with most questions or direct them to a place where they can find the answers.  I feel better already and wish more people would do the same.  Of course, every once in a while I get one of those “had you read the patch notes” eye twitches…but it tends to pass.
