Phase Four of the Elemental Invasion went live yesterday, much to the surprise of players. Quite a few were minding their own business when the skies darkened and the city security was telling all the low level characters to essentially GTFO NAO! They even offered portals! For the rest, it was barricading the city with sandbags. Then the elementals showed up. Yes, dear readers, that’s chaos at its finest.
Auctioneers dying, even low (and high) characters perishing if they didn’t leave the city before it was too late. By city I mean Ironforge and Stormwind for the Alliance, Thunder Bluff and Orgrimaar for the Horde. The city is genuinely attacked by elementals either an Air/Water combo or a Fire/Earth combo depending on what city you’re in (by the way, doing both is a great way to get the Tripping The Rifts feat of strength I mentioned last week). Players need to raid up fast and start defending. Each section of town needs some scraggling citizens rescued and rifts closed. Once you’ve done all zones, the attack ends. 78 or higher then have the luxury of queuing for some random bosses (four in total).
When the attack happens, it really is a sense of chaos. It’s not like when someone shows up doing “For The Faction” or even the zombies of pre-Wrath (which was fun in its own right). It’s basically figuring out what level you are and then whether you stay or go. Most people think this is a wonderful event and applaud Blizzard’s efforts to build towards the Cataclysm in such a rapid, and detailed, manner. Others are actually complaining.
Yes. Phase Four wasn’t even eight hours in and there were people complaining that they couldn’t access the auction houses or do their banking because they, or the NPC, were dead…or would die. Despite the wonder that’s happening, they are completely self-absorbed in what they can’t do. First off, the onslaught of elementals lasts half an hour if the city is defended in a decent manner. Second, um, LEAVE. You can almost guarantee these “low” toons are either their banker or a bank alt. The beauty of each faction is there are currently four major cities and since Wrath of the Lich King they’ve never been easier to get to (ugh, Westfall runs from Auberdine). Alliance can tram to Stormwind from Ironforge, or go straight from Stormwind, to the Harbor and get on a boat. Horde blimp it up in even better fashion. Or better yet, if it IS your auction house banker that’s in needed of a scenery change, I’m pretty sure you can afford to find a mage in the three hours between invasions in order to have a portal opened for you.
As I touched on earlier, I think the Zombie Invasion for Wrath of the Lich King was downright amazing. However, I think Blizzard listened to the whiners too much and cut the event short, regardless of what line they towed at the time. Given the scope and effort put into this year’s events, it looks as though Blizzard had a clear agenda on how this was going to play out in the month before the actual Cataclysm. I think because of that, the whiners best suck it up and pour themselves a big bowl of QQ Soup while the rest of us revel in what is truly epic.
